Deutz MAH 916 Injection Timing
Hello,
I am trying to figure out the timing for the injection pump on my 916. All of the shims that were originally on the engine are ruined and need replaced. Is there a certain number of shims I should start with and adjust timing from there? I have the manual that explains it but unfortunately my German language skills are lacking.
I appreciate any help!
-Ian

Hello Ian,
I will try to help you. Can you share some pictures? There are 2 types of MAH 916 with different types of pumps.
regards
Wolfgang

Here are some pictures of the pump and the whole engine. Does that show you what you need?
The pump had one metal and 6 plastic shims behind it and some fragments of other shims that seems to have been crushed.
I have all new shim stock to replace everything with.
I appreciate your help!

Re: Deutz MAH 916 Injection Timing
Hello Ian,
yes, now I will try to explain it with my own words.
First of all you need to remove the backflow-valve(?) in the pump. So you have to unsrew this: Behind it, remove the coilspring and the valve, and screw back the nut. Now install the pump to the engine. How many shims you install... fell free to guess.
It might help to install a short tube instead of the tube to the injector. Now the fuel will flow out of the pump, untill that moment when the injection starts. If it´s too early, you need to add more shims. If it´s to late you need to remove some of them. When the timing is ok, just install the backflow-valve.
This is not exactly the way as described in the manual, but I was always successfull on Bosch fuel pumps.
Good luck!
By the way... the engine will run. If the timing is too early it will sound harder and getting more warm. If too late the engine will sound smooth an doesn´t have the power it should have.

Re: Deutz MAH 916 Injection Timing
I'll try this later this week thanks!
I've gotten black smoke out the exhaust but it will not run. I think my camshaft was off to the crankshaft gear by a tooth.
Hopefully the next post is a video of it running
